Technology giant Intel has announced that it is intending to try and fill a networking gap within the building of integrated technology stack for data centres.
According to Steve Price, director of marketing for Intel's Communications Infrastructure Division, the company's Crystal Forest chipset has the specific hardware and software-driven features to compete in the area.
Mr Price commented: "When you compare it to dedicated network processors, it's very competitive."
It is suggested by the company that for this reason, the chip could help to speed up data processing as well as aggregating network data from servers inside data centres much quicker.
Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64, added: "The new chipset could be Intel's attempt to pair the networking element to its microprocessors and components as the company tries to fill the data centre technology stack."
Intel agreed to buy networking firm Fulcrum Microsystems this year, which manufactures ten gigabit ethernet and 40 gigabit ethernet switch products.
