The government has unveiled a new cloud computing service which, it is claimed, will enable public sector bodies to add the cloud to their business infrastructure easily.
CloudStore is intended to allow such organisations to include the cloud in their operations with ease, speed and transparency while also being able to break the dominance of big cloud firms.
It opened for business on Sunday and currently allows procurement officers at organisations and departments to pick from around 1,700 software services in four categories, from 258 suppliers.
Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said: "Simply stated, purchasing services from CloudStore will be quicker, easier, cheaper and more transparent for the public sector and suppliers alike.
"The launch of CloudStore is an important milestone in the Government’s ICT strategy to deliver savings and an IT system fit for the 21st century."
Cloud services should account for 50 per cent of central government IT spending by 2015 according to the Cabinet Office.
